Using databases Databases are collections or lists of resources Allow you to search for articles from different journals (and other sources) at once More reliable than public websites and search engines (e.g. Google and Wikipedia) –Database content written by subject experts –Information is checked and authorised Access through the Library website 14

Types of database Full-text Provide access to the complete article or item No need to search elsewhere for the article Examples: –JSTOR –Project MUSE Bibliographic Lists of items published in a particular subject Sometimes link to full text Examples: –Arts and Humanities Citation Index –Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH) 18

Introducing Boolean AND OR NOT These are linking words- they join your search term and tell a database how to interpret your search eg: Martin Luther NOT King Unicorn’s default search is ‘AND’- just like Google! 19
