Grade 1 Exams and Authentic Assessment A large percentage of assessment comes from Authentic Assessment of skills as well as knowledge. Authentic Assessment Maths 150% Maths 260% Science 150% Science 260% English 160% English 270% Health/PE80% Mid-Term Exams (Tests 1 & 3) Final Exams (Tests 2 & 4) 25% 20% 25% 20% -30% -20% Authentic Assessment Speaking tests, reading skills, spelling tests, etc. Exam Week Multiple choice, matching, gap-fill, short answer, problem solving

Term tests and ‘authentic’ assessment. Authentic assessments are completed in class at the end of every Unit to assess whether the concept is grasped by the students. Please check the homework diary daily to ensure that any homework that has been set is completed. Term tests are written as an exam at the end of every semester. Boys should review the Units that have been completed at home to be well prepared for these exams.

We speak politely and kindly to others. We look after our school inside and outside. We welcome all visitors. We have kind hands and feet and don’t hurt other children. We look after each other. We do not fight on the playground. We are nice, we share and take turns. We listen carefully. We say “please” and “thank you”. We are good friends. We try our very best.

Grade 1 textbooks

EP Skills will be used for practising our Jolly Phonics, reading and spelling skills. Most of these activities have a speaking component. On Fridays, we will also write our weekly spelling test.

Weekly spelling lists

Spelling extension activities

Please encourage your child to always do his best handwriting, drawing and colouring during homework. Homework should be done in a very quiet place with a desk and good light at the same time daily if possible. Please help your child with homework, but do not do the work for him. During reading and spelling homework please encourage your son to sound out his words and give him a chance to try and decode the word himself.

Boys who are trying their best get points for their teams or individual Super Tickets. Boys that don’t follow the class rules lose team points, or go onto ‘timeout’ traffic light board. If a boy wins a Super Ticket, they should keep them safe to trade them in for a reward with their homeroom teacher. At home: if boys are good at school, reward them! If they get timeouts maybe stop something they enjoy (cartoons or ice-cream) until they improve.

Healthy Snacks Your son may bring a healthy snack to eat at break time. Please do not allow him to bring unhealthy or sugary snacks as he will not be allowed to eat it during the school day. It is also unnecessary for your son to bring money to school everyday, unless he needs to buy new stationery. We allow the boys to go up to the 6 th floor on a Friday to buy a treat so please try and limit money to Fridays only.

Check and sign your son’s Homework Diary each day. Remind your son to check his timetable before packing his bag. Only bring the books that are needed. Otherwise their bags are too heavy to carry. Practice the Spelling List together. Its also a good idea to check their spelling together. Take an active interest in your son’s day at school. Ask him to tell you about what he has learnt at school that day (In Thai or English). Play a sport twice a week or more. This improves energy levels. It also helps social development.

We try to develop a love for reading at school so please try to encourage your son to read a little bit everyday. The EP library is open everyday and is a wonderful place for the boys to read in before school or during lunch time. They are also able to borrow books from the library to take home. Proper nutrition is necessary for healthy development – motor skills, concentration and intellectual skills. Please ensure that your son follows a healthy, balanced diet. Make sure your son gets plenty of sleep. A lack of sleep at night can also affect motor skills and concentration during the day, leading to more accidents and behavioural problems, and poor performance at school. Your son should be getting about 10 hours of sleep a night. Help him by setting up a good night time routine. Remember that your son is still a little boy that learns through play and exploration! Please allow for him to have some time for this whenever possible.
