Benefits of Bilingualism

I am glad that the family is together. Maria and I made a decision about Kelvin’s education. Yes we are very excited!

Really Guzman. What did you two decide for my grandson?

Papa, we want Kelvin to be educated in a bilingual school.

You mean learn two languages at the same time? It could confuse him.

I don’t know son. Is that a good idea?

He may seem to be confused at first. Later being bilingual will help his mind work better and faster!

It will even help him remember better when he gets older.

What do you think Danilo? It’s true! He will also learn more words. He will know words in both English and Spanish.

I have a question. Will he stop learning English if he learns Spanish?

Good question! He will learn English and Spanish together. We can also help by speaking Spanish at home.

Learning Spanish at home will help both languages. He will learn to speak, understand, read, and write in both languages.

That sounds good for him. We can also teach him about our history and our culture. That is very important.

He will know two cultures! The whole family will be proud of him. We can teach him about our music, foods, and our ancestors.

He should be able to talk to his cousins back in Guatemala.

Also, when he goes to school and college with other Spanish and English speaking kids, he will get along great with them.

In high school and college, everyone has to learn a second language. Our child will already know Spanish ! If he is bilingual, he will be better prepared for college. Then, he can choose from many professions and get a great job!!

Think of how smart our son will be! Won’t you?

He is already smart! Yes, but he will be smarter knowing two languages! Kelvin, don’t you want to learn another language?

Can I be a soccer star?

You can be whatever you want!! You can also travel around the world to do big business!! You can travel to other countries with the church and help others.

!! I will learn English and Spanish.
