WHY? The 2013 NJ ASK* will measure the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) within the current NJ ASK blueprint The NJ ASK assessments are called “transitional” because we will not be able to measure the full range of the CCSS until the next generation assessments are developed and administered New Jersey is a Governing state in The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). PARCC is currently developing the next generation assessments to be administered in Spring 2015

Common Core State Standards Common Core State Standards (CCSS) will be assessed.

 LANGUAGE ARTS ASSESSMENT Writing: –Informative/Explanatory or Opinion-30 minutes –Narrative-30 minutes Reading: Narrative Texts/Fables/Folktales Informational Texts: How-To, Biography, Nonfiction These sections include: –Open-Ended Questions (worth up to 4 points) –Multiple Choice Questions (worth 1 point)

SAMPLE LITERATURE OPEN-ENDED QUESTION Throughout the passage, Charlie exhibited many different character traits. Choose three adjectives which best describe Charlie in this story. Explain how these character traits influenced Charlie’s behavior at the end of the story. Use details from the text to support your opinion.

Narrative Writing The narrative writing prompt is a brief scenario with characters and a setting The students must develop a story using the prompt which includes a beginning, middle and clear ending

Sample Narrative Prompt When Tony arrived home after school, the large package was there waiting for him on the kitchen table. He had been waiting for days for it to arrive, and now he had it in his hands. Quickly, he tore open the package and examined the contents. Write a story about the reason for Tony’s excitement.

Create an opening “hook” Create characters and dialogue Frame a setting Create a plot State and explain the main problem Solve the problem Write the lesson learned Do all tasks while using high level vocabulary, descriptive adjectives and verbs, specific nouns, figurative language, varied sentence structure, and other advanced writing techniques All scores based on a 5 point rubric In 30 Minutes...

Informative/Explanatory Writing The child in the poem “Lucky Grandma!” helps her grandmother with many things. Think about a time when you helped someone. Write a composition about that time In your composition, be sure to: Explain who the person was. Describe what you did to help. Explain why you liked helping this person.

Scientists report that gray squirrels find hundreds of nuts each week that they bury in different places. Then the squirrels dig up all those nuts and bury them again in new spots. They also dig some holes that they don’t ever use for storing nuts. What problems could these actions cause for a gray squirrel? Write a composition discussing the problems squirrels could have because of the way they bury their nuts. Explain why you think they bury and rebury their nuts. Analyze or explain why squirrels might dig holes they do not want to use. Informative/ Explanatory Writing

NJ ASK- Math Grades 3 - 5

Mathematical Processes

Short Constructed Response Questions Students calculate the answer and record the answer on the line. No explanations are needed to support students answers. Students should spend minutes per question.

Multiple Choice Questions Students select an answer from the list of choices provided. Students should spend approximately 1- 2 minutes per question. Correct answers are worth 1 point.

Extended Constructed Response Questions These questions involve students answering multiple questions centered around a problem. Students then need to explain their mathematical thinking and justify their process through written language. Students should spend about 10 minutes to answer each of these questions. A task-specific holistic scoring rubric is used in which students can earn up to 3 points.

Things You Can Do At Home Raz Reading Talk with your child about daily writing completed. Ask questions about what your child reads Common Core Coach Read every night Study math facts Go to bed early Eat a healthy breakfast!

Thank you!
