Community Event Proposal
Presentation transcript:

Global Awareness Event Proposal : An event to raise awareness for human right issues around the world

What is the event  Similar to a science fair  An evening in the school gymnasium  Open to the community  Students will give individual presentations regarding a selected topic

What topics will be discussed?  Each student will select from a list of potential human right issues that he or she would like to discuss  Each topic will be discussed from a personal, social, and cultural point of view

What are human right issues?  In essence, human rights workers are creating an effort to protect the rights of the human race  Topics for the event will include:  Poverty  Clean water initiatives  Human trafficking  Women’s rights  Adoption

 Human Rights Video Human Rights Video

How will we bring attention to the event?  Flyers, brochures, etc.  Information will be posted to the school website  Students will be required to visit at least one local business, stakeholder, or prominent community member each  Administration will inform other schools and/or administrative workers of the event

Why a global awareness event?  “Global awareness is the first step towards cross- cultural competency” (Doppen & An, 2014)  Will bring to light how we have thought in the past unconsciously and will help to reshape beliefs  Ideally will diminish or abolish any prejudices and discriminations previously in existence  Will raise awareness and spark a movement of resolution

How does this apply to the student’s education?  Meets several Virginia SOLs, which include, but are not limited to: research, reading, writing, and presentation skills  Strengthen the student’s awareness of human right issues in his or her home country  Teach students the importance of being empowered to make a difference

What will the presentation look like?  Each presentation will change with each individual student  The minimum requirement will be a display board containing information about the issue, addressing the issue from multiple perspectives, and presenting a solution  The presentation can be more extensive and interactive if the student so chooses

What is the projected result of the event?  Surveys for attendees and students  Raised awareness of human right issues around the globe  Diminished prejudices and biases  Committed assistance from members of the community, stakeholders, and parents.

How does this create a culturally responsive teaching environment?  Communication of high expectations  Teacher as facilitator  Positive perspective on parents and families of culturally and linguistically diverse students  Student-centered, student- controlled classroom discourse
