Word Equations & Predicting Products Mrs. Cook

Write a balanced chemical equations for this reaction. A solution of barium hydroxide reacts with a sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ) solution to produce a precipitate of barium sulfate and also water.

Glucose ferments to produce ethanol(C 2 H 6 O) and carbon dioxide. Word equation: Chemical equation:

Na 2 O(s) + P 4 O 10 (s)  Na 3 PO 4 (s)

A piece of Silver and copper (II) nitrate solution were produced when silver nitrate solution was reacted with a piece of copper Word equation: Chemical equation:

Predicting Products of Rxns 1) Look at the beginning of the reaction to determine the type (ex: Is it element + cmpd?) 2) Rearrange the elements/compounds based on the type (ex: if it is synthesis then put elements together ) 3) Be sure to balance the charges of ionic compounds using subscripts 4) Then balance the complete equation with coefficients. Remember H 2 O 2 F 2 Br 2 I 2 N 2 Cl 2, S 8 and P 4 Useful website for help: predict.htm predict.htm

Types of Reactions Review:  Synthesis: A + B  AB  Decomposition: AB  A + B  Single Replacement: A + BC  B + AC  Double Replacement: AB + CD  CB + AD  Combustion: E + O 2  EO CH + O 2  CO 2 + H 2 O

Predicting Product Examples __________1. Sn + CuSO 4  __________2. Ca + I 2  __________3. Mg + HCl  __________4. CaO  __________5. C 10 H 8 + O 2  __________6. Na 2 CO 3 + H 2 SO 4  __________7. FeS  *Answers in the notes section

Predicting Product Examples Cont. __________8. Zn + CuSO 4  __________9. NaOH + BaCl 2  __________10. CH 4 + O 2  __________12. Mg + Pb(NO 3 ) 2  __________13. H 2 SO 4  __________14. Na + F 2 
