warm-blooded vertebrates that include human beings and all other animals that nourish their young with milk produced by mammary glands and have the skin usually more or less covered with hair

There are many mammals that live in the ocean. Whales, dolphins, sea lions, walruses, manatees and polar bears to name a few.

What do you think keeps these warm blooded animals warm when they are in very cold ocean waters?

A layer of fat below the skin called blubber is one reason animals who are warm blooded can stay warm and survive in cold water.

We are going to get into our science groups and experiment with a material that simulates blubber in underwater animals. Scientists record what they observe when they do experiments. You are going to use an iPad to make a video or make a chart on paper. If you make a paper chart, then you will want to include comments from people as well as possible illustrations of what you observed. REMEMBER

Let’s Experiment!

Discussion Hmm. I must think it through. Besides blubber, what are some other physical characteristics that help keep animals keep warm in cold climates?

Think of some animals that live in cold climates and some that live in hot climates. Compare and contrast their physical characteristics.

Humans have a layer of fat under the skin, but not enough to keep us warm. How do humans keep warm in cold weather? It is NOT by sticking your tongue out!

Underwater mammals differ in many ways from mammals that live on land. In what ways are land mammals and underwater mammals similar?

What common characteristics qualify both groups of animals to be called mammals? We are mammals. I’m a mammal. We are mammals.

Let’s do one final experiment to see if what we observed can be proven. We Observed The water felt really cold even with the hand in a baggie. The water was not as cold with hand in the blubber pouch.
