TELEX MACHINES These machines used radio and/or microwaves to transmit information over the airwave. Variations of them are still in use today for communications by the hearing impaired. Both users needed to have the machine. Less expensive & quicker, compared to phone and post.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT Telex began in Germany as a research and development program in 1926 that became an operational tele-printer service in Telex provided the first common medium for international record communications using standard signal techniques & operating criteria as specified by the International Telecommunication Union (agency of United Nations responsible for issues that concern information and communication technologies).
HOW DOES IT WORK? Electromechanical terminals using roll paper printed on, by a cylindrical drum with the letters on it. On the left is the paper tape punch. The paper tape encoded the data with a system of punched holes. Once the telex was sent, when the connection was made, the paper tape was played back to the receiving telex. This style of messaging would not be hindered by slow-typing mistakes. It was also possible to leave the tape punch on to record receiving telexes as well for retransmission.
WHAT DID A MESSAGE LOOK LIKE? Image telex to Vulcan's Florida based manager of engineering services, Jesse Perry, from Alan Keet, at Straits Engineers in Singapore. Telexes were identified by the telex number and the answerback. Telex could also be used in a "dialogue" mode similar to instant messaging.
Telex Machines Today… In parts of the banking and financial system, Telex is still used for some types of trade confirmation. In remote parts of Africa, telex is still the most reliable (and often) only form of government and administrative communication. Ocean-going ships are required to have Telex, as a safety requirement.
