THE TOLLUND MAN

HISTORICAL INQUIRY QUESTIONS: What? What is the source? What is the source showing us and telling us? Who? Who created the source? Who is the source showing? When? When was the source created? Is it dated? Where? Where was the source found? Where was the source created? Why? Why was the source created? Why is the source important?

Tacitus was a famous Roman historian who wrote about the time in his book about Germanic tribes, in around 97-98 AD. He had travelled to Northern Europe and described a criminal hanging as: “They hang traitors and renegades in trees, cowards, combat evaders and unnaturally immoral people they lower into filthy swamps and over them with branches” (2009:85)… “After this the chariot, the robes, and the Goddess herself are washed an clean in a hidden lake. This task is done by the slaves who are then drowned in the lake”.

Investigate: Who was Tollund man and how did he live and die Investigate: Who was Tollund man and how did he live and die? Where and when was the discovery made? Who discovered the body? How was it discovered? What is the Iron Age? How are bodies preserved in the bogs? What did scientific examination of the body teach us about how people lived at that time? What do the items found with the body teach us about how he lived at that time? Examine written resources by Cornelius Tacitus about that period. How do they help reconstruct what happened to the body? Share and examine all the evidence as a group. Come up with a hypothesis of who Tollund man was and how he lived and died. Use your research to support your answer.
