Human Body Systems Lesson 13 Terms and Definitions
Q: What is a calorie, AND How does a calorie relate to energy?
A Perfect Balance! Bodies want a balance between nutrients we take in (eat) and energy we use (output). Energy intake and Energy output.
INTAKE Energy Intake- determined by measuring the energy stored in the chemical bonds of the nutrients we eat. When the chemical bonds are broken in cellular respiration the energy is released as heat and ATP.
Energy is store in the chemical bonds, in the nutrients we eat. During cellular respiration the bonds are broken and the energy is released.
OUTPUT Energy Output – the sum of the energy: 1.“Use it” - Life Processes – maintain body temp, breath, etc. 2.“Lose it” - Lost (excess energy not needed) – energy we get rid of through radiation, exhaling, etc. 3.“Store it” - Energy Stored – FAT and Glycogen
calorie VS Calorie calorie – ( with a little c ) is the amount of heat energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1°C. This is a VERY small unit of measurement.
calorie VS Calorie Calorie – ( with a BIG C ) (also known as a kilocalorie) is the amount of heat energy needed to raise the temperature of 1000g of water 1°C.
