21 November 2003Jacques Lefrancois1 HOSTING ELECTRONICS AND CONNECTIVITY Role of calorimeter system: Level 0 trigger +  reconstruction +e/  id. Level 0 trigger is digital: first step is to convert energy with ADC => 1 signal=>10-12 bits => trigger in counting room too costly in signal transport. => local trigger Ecal and Hcal trigger is performed on 2X2 cell clusters=> connectivity, inside cards, between cards, between crates For HCAL (hadron) trigger an eventual ECAL cluster energy in front of HCAL candidate cluster should be added=> connectivity HCAL- >Ecal For ECAL trigger (e, ,  °) the PS and SPD are used to characterize the trigger type => connectivity between ECAL candidate and corresponding PS/SPD cells.

21 November 2003Jacques Lefrancois2 Electronic cards and crates Number of ECAL cells = PS cells = SPD cells = 5952 Number of HCAL cells = 1468 ECAL/HCAL cards 32 channels per card. Coax cables from PMT to Front End (FE)cards. PS 64 channel MAPMT, VFE cards with amplifier integrator => twisted pair cables to PS FE cards (16 cables (of 4 pairs) with 16 RG45 connectors per 64 channels FE cards) SPD 64 channel MAPMT, VFE with amplifier integrator + discriminator => multiplexed signals (up to 21 signals per 4 twisted pairs cable) => connected to corresponding PS FE card (4 cables per card) FE Cards are 9U (366mm high) but only 280mm in depth

21 November 2003Jacques Lefrancois6 Calorimeter card input defined 1.32 inputs, 4 connectors of 8 coax.  First idea: each connector is a row of 8 cells  But ECAL cables are on a steel tape, vertical. Thus horizontal cabling is not welcome ! 2.A connector is 2 columns of 4 rows  Implies a special bundle for HCAL, as the detector connector is a row of 8 PM Seems possible, as this is on the side of HCAL and there is enough free space to make the installation not too difficult

21 November 2003Jacques Lefrancois7 PreShower input also defined 1.64 signals grouped in 16 RJ45 cables  Numbered A1, A2,…D3, D4 2.SPD  Cabling in back of crate  14 pairs input foreseen 1234 A B C D

21 November 2003Jacques Lefrancois8 Trigger interconnections To obtain energy in 2X2 clusters, ADC counts are added most are done inside cards Neighbouring cards information obtained trough backplane Some neighbouring cells in another crate=> 8 bits information transported by RG45 cables multiplexed at 350MhZ No interconnection between different region of calorimeters(cell size) or between right and left part Highest cluster sent to validation card HCAL candidates/per FEcards sent to ECAL validation card for summation (RG45 cables 350MhZ) ECAL candidates addresses sent to PS card. Information of PS/SPD sent back to ECAL validation cards (all RG45 350MhZ)

21 November 2003Jacques Lefrancois9 Rack layout is defined 1.Minimize the inter-rack connections  Inner and Middle zones have 2 ECAL + 1 PreShower crates They share a rack  Outer zone needs 2 racks 2.Rack position not yet frozen 3.HCAL rack is simple :only 2 crates no interconnection

21 November 2003Jacques Lefrancois15 Layout of cables The input coax cables to ECAL FE cards will stored underneath the platform and brought out at the bottom of racks they will go up in 2 bundles on each side of racks with 256 cables each (for racks with 2 ECAL crates) Each bundle is about 7X7 cm 2.The bundle are bent below the crates (in front of heat exchanger) and coax distributed to each cards. The HCAL signals are distributed in a similar way but extra length of coax are stored on HCAL sides. The PS signals come from above and are distributed to PS crates The SPD signals come from above also and are distributed to the back of PS crates.

21 November 2003Jacques Lefrancois17 Layout of cables (continued) Most RG45 cables for trigger are connecting two crates inside one rack and hence will pass in the (“Zone de service”) of the racks. About 20 cm 2 are required. The 40 trigger cables from HCAL to ECAL form a bundle of about 15 cm 2 It will use a flexible storage system to allow ECAL or HCAL movement. This is not shown on platform design yet. There are also cables to DAQ and trigger (Fibers) and service cables leaving the platform. Detailed drawing do not exist yet, but the numbers are rather small. For example fiber ribbon for DAQ and about 200 fibers for trigger.
