‘MATHS AT MAPPERLEY’ WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS SUMMER 2016

MICKEY MOUSE: "ARITHMETIC IS BEING ABLE TO COUNT UP TO TWENTY WITHOUT TAKING OFF YOUR SHOES." Charles Darwin: "A mathematician is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat which isn't there."

THIS AFTERNOON… Look briefly at the new Maths curriculum (content and changes) Look briefly at the programme of study for Reception, KS1 and KS2 Have a go! Explore the resources provided Have the opportunity to ask questions about how maths is taught at Mapperley (and I’ll do my best to answer them!) And finally…a really hard maths test! Not really but there is an evaluation sheet which I would very much appreciate you filling in!

WHY IS MATHEMATICS IMPORTANT? A high quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. National Curriculum for Mathematics (DFE September 2013

HOW DOES THE NEW CURRICULUM AFFECT THE WAY MY CHILD WILL LEARN MATHS? Higher expectations Age related curriculum Focus on mental and written methods

THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM FOR MATHEMATICS AIMS TO ENSURE THAT ALL PUPILS: Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics… Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry… Can solve problems by applying their mathematics in a variety of contexts…

BRIEF OUTLINE… In… Larger numbers earlier Tables to 12x12 by end of Year 4 Earlier introduction to formal written methods Focus on fractions Focus on problem solving Out… No data handling in Year 1 No probability until end of KS2 No use of calculators until the end of KS2

WORDS, WORDS AND MORE WORDS! Vocabulary is important and can be tricky! Examples: Difference Leaves Left Takeaway Sum

ENOUGH OF ME...NOW IT’S YOUR TURN! On the tables I have set out various resources covering different aspects within the maths curriculum. They have been divided into 4 categories-Early Years, KS1, Lower KS2 and Upper KS2. There are examples to look at and paper and pencils if you want to have a go! This is also question time, so please ask if there is anything in particular you would like to know

AND FINALLY… Thank you all for coming! If you could take a couple of minutes to fill in the evaluation sheet and a ‘Mapperley Mouthpiece’ it would be much appreciated. Examples of yearly expectations, key objectives and mathematical vocabularly etc are available if you’d like a copy to take home. Next…’Open Morning Maths Lessons’, details to follow!
