"Integrated logistic for the use of biomass energy in Slovakia„ LIFE03 ENV/SK/ Coordinating beneficiary: BIOMASA, Association of legal entities Associated beneficiares: 3 municipalities Duration: 1-th April 2003 to 31-th March 2006 Total budget: 6,185 mil. € EC contribution: 1,011 mil. €

Approach of the project The project aimed to create and manage an innovative logistics system of wood waste (sawdust) collection, transport, processing to wood pellets and delivery to end users, which has never been used in Europe before in such a way; The demonstration of a new way to introduce alternative environmentally friendly fuels in a Central and Eastern European country, which is competitive to fossil fuels; Increase of public awareness and interest for establishing biomass heating in Slovakia;

How and what they realized Overall aim of the project was to create a market in Northwest Slovakia (and beyond) for renewable fuels; Encourage the schools and municipality offices to install biomass boilers; Create new pellet plant on North Slovakia; 42 biomass boilers reconstruction; Monitoring through installed central computer; Slovak biomass market was about tonnes/year while Biomasa produced nearly tones;

Success comes Energy Globe Award world award for sustainable development is the most important environmental award; 732 excellent projects from 93 countries; Biomasa won the award in 2006;

What was next ? BIOMASA´s new project LIFE08 ENV/SK/ „Creative high efficient and effective use of biomass“ Duration: 1-th Jan to 31-th Dec Total budget: 1,358 mil. € EC contribution: 0,491 mil. € MoE contribution: 0,491 mil. €
