THE BIG INTERVIEW “To teach is to touch the future.” Heather Pantley EDU650 Week 6 Dr. Jackie W. Kyger, Ed.D.

Heather Pantley From Fayetteville, North Carolina A Military Spouse Teacher Assistant Substitute Special needs one-on-one Family Readiness Group Leader BA in Early Childhood Education MA in Education in 10/2016

Part 1: Effective Lesson Design and Backwards Design My Teaching Philosophy My goal for everyone of my students to be successful. Instilling the love of learning in students. Creativity and problem solving skill are crucial. Hard work, truthfulness, kindness, and respect are important. Each student is an individual and will be treated with respect and understanding. “When you believe in something with your whole heart, it changes your behavior…When you believe in your students, it changes your actions as you respond to their needs.” (Lopez, 2013)

Classroom Management Provide the students an environment that is based on hard work, trust, kindness, making good choices, and doing your best. My role is classroom will be to provide the environment, tools, guidance, and support my students will need to be successful active learners. I will need to know each student personally so that I can guide them to meet their individual educational goals. I will expect the students to work hard and do their best, they will be expected to actively learn and use their curiosity and problem skills to explore and find answers. “Students have choices, it is your (the teacher) job to help them understand this and to equip them to make appropriate choices in life.” (Springer & Persiani, 2011)

Different School Models Teacher based School Model Teacher lecture based Students memorize facts, communication is one way- teachers to students Mainly summative assessments Student Lead Model Learning is student directed. Teacher’s role is a coach and guidance Students have a larger voice in feedback Formative assessments used more

Assessment Matters Both formative and summative assessments should be used as a map into the student’s learning journey and used to reach the end goal of success. Formative Assessment Done with the idea that the information collected will be used to help further the students learning. Summative Assessment Done with the idea to measure how much the student has learned, usually done at the end of a lesson. “What is the goal or objective, where you are in relation to it, and what are we going to do to close that gap?” (Stenhouepublisher, 2010)

Effective Lesson Planning and Design Backwards lesson Planning has three main points: “It begins with defining what teachers want students to learn. Once the end (the learning outcome) has been identified, the next stage focuses on developing a plan to assess when the outcome has been met. The final stage relates to planning the learning activities in which students will engage.” (Neman, 2013) Lesson Design My focus on lesson design will be student interest lead.  Open ended questions  Curiosity and creativity  Problem solving “Perhaps one of the most noticeable elements in a classroom is the experiences in which students engage.” (Newman, 2013)

Professiona l Development Being in the role of a teacher means that the learning never stops. Professional development helps teacher stay at the top of their game. Types of professional development include: Continuing education classes One day seminars Workshops “Teachers must be well acquainted with the latest pedagogical approaches in order to relay information to their students in the most effective fashion.” (Kyger, 2015)
