NATURAL RESOURCES Anything found in nature that can be used by people

BRAINSTORM THE JOBS /INDUSTRIES THAT COME FROM THE NATURAL RESOURCES IN CANADA: Forests Water Energy Wilderness Agriculture Fish Minerals

THREE CATEGORIES OF NATURAL RESOURCES: RENEWABLE RESOURCES NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES FLOW RESOURCES

RENEWABLE RESOURCES C an grow again after people harvest them. Ex. Wild animals hunted for food Plants gathered for food or to feed livestock Forests harvested for lumber and paper Soil for producing crops

NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES Are present on Earth in limited amounts and when they are used they are gone forever Ex. Metallic minerals (copper, iron, aluminum, etc.) Non-metallic minerals (diamonds, potash, sand, gravel, etc.) Fossil Fuels (coal, oil, natural gas)

FLOW RESOURCES These are neither renewable, nor non- renewable and must be used where and when they occur. Ex. Water (for hydroelectric power or drinking water) Wind (for wind power) Sunlight (for solar energy)

SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE SYSTEM One that will last into the future and one in which natural resources are not used up faster than they can either renew themselves, be recycled, or be replaced with other resources. Do you think that we should be responsible to make sure natural resources are available for future generations?

ACTIVITY Look at the objects at your table. List the original source of the parts of the object (what natural resource does it belong to?) Decide if these natural resources are renewable, non-renewable or flow. Suggest how we can make these resources sustainable for future generations.
