CANADIAN GEOGRAPHY 1202 UNIT 4: Global Issues in Canadian Geography

We are connected to other countries in the world more than we ever were? How so?

How do we connect with other countries? Trading goods Tourism Sports Communication Systems (internet, telephone, etc.) Increased Migration Transportation advances (planes, automobiles, trains, subways, etc.) ANYTHING ELSE?

How do your everyday actions have far-reaching effects all over the world? Refer to pages 385 and 386

GLOBAL VILLAGE Advances in technology, especially in communications and transportation, have brought people around the world closer together so that they can interact almost as easily as if they lived in the same small village

GLOBALIZATION The complex international relationship of increasing economic and social interaction

QUESTIONS

1. Where are your everyday items made? (Here and at home) What does this tell you?

2. Is the world more interdependent today than it was in the past?

3. Why is the world becoming more interdependent? What are the consequences of this trend?

WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP?

Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) try to find solutions for global issues. They are especially concerned with human rights issues (child labour) and environmental issues (habitat protection and preserving endangered species)

Be a good GLOBAL CITIZEN: Canadian citizen has well-established human rights. Take advantage of this. Take responsibility and take action. It can be big or small.

Tips on being a good Global Citizen Be empathetic (put yourself in someone else’s shoes) Think critically (analyze issues from all sides) ADD TO THIS LIST……..
