Presentation transcript:

The Aeolian Islands or Lipari Islands are a volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily, named after the demigod of the winds Aeolus. The locals residing on the islands are known as Eolians. The Aeolian Islands are a popular tourist destination in the summer, and attract up to 200,000 visitors annually. The largest island is Lipari. The other islands include Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea. They can be reached by hydrofoils or ships.

A hydrofoil is a wing-like structure mounted on struts below the hull of a boat, which lifts the boat partially out of the water during forward motion, in order to reduce drag. It is supported by buoyancy while motor manages to reach high speeds (around 50 knots). The main uses of hydrofoils are the passenger transport over short distances. Transportation is not always possible during winter because of storms.

The ship is a means of transport designed for the transport of goods, people and water. You have then passenger ships, cruise ships. ferries, takers, cargo ships and container ships. The water system of the aeolian islands is powered by tankers that carry fresh water twice a week and directly supplying the houses. Ship’s information: Engine power: Diesel Service speed: around 36 knots Max number of passengers: 238 Winter and summer crew: number 6

The research activities of ITAE revolve around new eco-friendly energetics technologies. The production and accumulation of hydrogen invest a great importance considering the use of hydrogen vehicles. The direct use of solar energy through photovoltaic cells reduces the use of fossil sources.

Hydrogen Bike: A fuel cell generates electricity by hydrogen to power a small electric motor so you do less work and you go faster without causing pollution. A full tank costs 18 euros for a total of 150 km of autonomy (12 cents / km). Pod Car: The pod car (Personal Rapid Transit), carries two to ten people travelling on elevated rails. It allows considerable energy savings and a high rate of reduction of CO2 emissions compared to other means of transport. Dragon Fly: It is a single-seater helicopter, powered by hydrogen, that after burning, emits water vapor instead of exhaust fumes. It uses hydrogen peroxide and it generates 102 horses.
