An earthquake is a vibration of the earth’s surface.

Earthquakes are common in California because it is located on the San Andreas Fault. California has thousands of earthquakes every year. Some so small they aren’t even felt.

The first recorded earthquake in California was felt in One of the worst earthquakes California has seen was on April 18, 1906 in San Francisco. It killed 3,000 people and cost $524 million in damages.

WHY? Why do you think the earthquake in 1906 cost $524 million in damages?

Answer!

THINK! If you had been alive in 1906, how would your family have been affected by the devastating earthquake?

Answer!

Why do earthquakes happen? Click the second star to find out!

A fault is a thin zone of crushed rock separating blocks of the earth’s crust.

HOW? How did the last video make you feel? Why?

Answer!

Earthquakes are caused when rocks underground suddenly break a long a fault causing a sudden release of energy.

The rocks are constantly rubbing against each other. Sometimes the rocks will stick to one another causing a build up of pressure. This build up of pressure causes the rocks to break.

How are earthquakes recorded? Click on the third star to learn!

Have you ever heard of a seismograph? What d you think they do?

Answer!

An earthquake’s time, location, and magnitude can all be determined with a seismograph.

A seismograph is an instrument that measures the motions of the ground. The first seismograph was created around 132 A.D.

1) Why do earthquakes happen ? A. Volcanoes erupt causing earthquakes. Volcanoes erupt causing earthquakes. B. Underground rocks break causing earthquakes. Underground rocks break causing earthquakes. C. Earthquakes are caused by people. Earthquakes are caused by people.

Correct! You’re right! B is the correct answer because earthquakes happen due to underground rocks that break.

Incorrect A is not the correct answer. Please go back and try again.

Incorrect C is not the correct answer. Please go back and try again.

2) What is an earthquake? A) A vibration of the earth’s surface. A vibration of the earth’s surface. B) A storm. A storm. C) A thin zone of crushed rock. A thin zone of crushed rock.

Correct! You’re right! A is the correct answer because an earthquake is a vibration of the earth’s surface.

Incorrect B is not the correct answer. Please go back and try again.

Incorrect C is not the correct answer. Please go back and try again.

3) When was the first seismograph created? A) B) C) 132 A. D. 132 A. D.

Correct! You’re right! C is the correct answer because the first seismograph was created in 132 A.D.

Incorrect A is not the correct answer. Please go back and try again.

Incorrect B is not the correct answer. Please go back and try again.

4) True or False: A fault is a thin zone of crushed rock separating blocks of the earth’s crust.

Correct! You’re right! True is the correct answer because a fault is a thin zone of crushed rock separating blocks of the earth’s crust.

Incorrect True is the correct answer because a fault is a thin zone of crushed rock separating blocks of the earth’s crust.

5) What all can be measured using a seismograph? A) Time Time B) Location Location C) Magnitude Magnitude D) All of the above All of the above

Correct! You’re right! D is the correct answer because seismographs can measure an earthquake’s time, location, and magnitude.

Incorrect A is not the correct answer. Please go back and try again.

Incorrect B is not the correct answer. Please go back and try again.

Incorrect C is not the correct answer. Please go back and try again.
