Activity Description Activity 8: Civic Responsibilities (GLEs: 27, 44) Materials List: Word Grid BLM Brainstorm (view literacy strategy descriptions) a list of taxes that students already know about, adding to their understanding with notations of common taxes they might not have known about previously. Then based on their definitions of rule and law from Activity 1, have students determine whether paying taxes is a rule or a law. (A possible extension might be to share with them three to five state tax laws and have them debate the fairness of these laws.) Beside each notation, write who is responsible for paying that tax as specifically as possible.view literacy strategy descriptions Next, have students create a list of all the services in which the state government provides and spends money. Finish the activity with a state government word grid (view literacy strategy descriptions). Students will match a service with a branch of government by placing a plus or minus in the appropriate box. Once the grid is completed, allow time for students to quiz each other over the content in preparation for tests and other class activities.
