What is Sustainable Design? Sustainable design is when we make products that have as little impact on the environment as possible. We should try to use as little material and energy as possible, while trying to minimise the amount of waste we produce. Here are 4 ways that we can reduce the impact on the environment: In pairs, can you match the word and the definition? Reduce Recycle Refuse Reuse Not buying or making a product in the first place, in order to reduce environmental impact, for example, refusing a carrier bag when shopping. Cut down on the amount of materials used, for example designing a product with less parts or minimising waste. Using recycled or old materials in the product, for example a pencil case made from old car tyres. Taking a product and using it for something new, for example, making jewellery from old carrier bags. Hawaii: Most beautiful place on Earth?

Examination Question 2011 (6) Waste minimisation in the production of wooden furniture is a key issue in today’s society. Discuss the ways in which waste can be minimised in the manufacture of wooden furniture. Tip: Think about why waste material is produced in the workshop Reason 1. Getting parts wrong and having to scrap them / throw away. Reason 2. Poorly laid out work therefore creating a lot of waste. Reason 3. Using wasting processes that create waste when making shapes. (e.g turning) Now use those reasons in your answer and suggest how you can stop this happening. Answer here. 3 reasons with your explanation

Discuss the ways in which natural wood and timber can be conserved when manufacturing products. Reduce Recycle Ensure that you use the keyword in any sustainability answer, i.e. reduce, recycle, reuse, refuse.
