Brown vs. Board of Education By: Darrian B. & Lysette S.

Esther Brown ❏ A married, white, Catholic woman ❏ Crusader for equal educational opportunities in Kansas City. ❏ She thought that how white children had better and more schools than black children was unfair and took it to court. ❏ Was threatened by townsfolk burning a cross in her yard.

Brown’s Case ❏ Victorious in May 17th, 1945 ❏ The case was known as one of the greatest Supreme Court decisions of the 20th century.

Robert Carter ❏ He is the father of the little girl. ❏ He joined the Thurgood Marshall’s Legal Defense Fund. ❏ Served as a Lieutenant in World War 2 where he became known to white officers as “an uppity Negro”.

Oliver Brown ❏ Esther Brown’s Husband. ❏ He got fired from his job because of his wife’s court case.

Victory! ❏ Mrs. Brown was victorious in her case on May 17th, ❏ They unanimously agreed: “Segregation of white and colored children in public schools has a detrimental effect upon the colored children. The impact is greater when it has the sanction of law; for the policy of separating the races is usually interpreted as denoting the inferiority of the Negro group.”

Victory! ❏ “A sense of inferiority affects the motivation of a child to learn. Segregation with the sanction of law, therefore, has a tendency to retard the educational and mental development of Negro children and to deprive them of some of the benefits they would receive in a racially integrated school system.”
