CCCApply Why do we even ask some of these questions? ATHLETIC INTEREST Title IX Compliance If a student indicates an interest in playing on a “sports team” the student will receive an additional set of questions (sport, level of interest and ability) Information is provided to Athletic Deans at each college who use the information to contact students Athletic Deans receive the information in a report and must include in Title IX Athletic Reporting
CCCApply Why do we even ask some of these questions? SOCIO-ECONOMIC INDICATORS Income level and Size of Household Data is summarized based on federal poverty guidelines to determine income levels Used as one indicator of socio-economic status for Perkins funding TANF, CalWORKs, Single Parent Used as one indicator of socio-economic status for Perkins funding
CCCApply LESSONS LEARNED: when a question is changed on the application In response to a Senate Bill added sexual orientation & transgender questions to application Unintended Consequence: increase in “unknown” gender MIS Reporting Issue: if the data element is part of the referential check process can result in all college files to be rejected if over five (5) percent
CCCApply LESSONS LEARNED: when a question is changed on the application Race and Ethnicity Changed to meet Federal OMB Guidelines Hispanic/Latino (yes/no question first) and Multi-Race category added No longer able to conduct longitudinal studies on race/ethnicity For Los Rios colleges large proportions of unknown ethnicity caused issue with MIS referential check. Had to resurvey those students who had not provided race/ethnicity data
CCCApply LESSONS LEARNED: when a college transitions to CCCApply DATA VALIDITY ISSUES First Generation: locally derived questions more reflective of first generation students; have seen a substantive decline Program Major and Educational Goal: Must reflect local college programs ; future implications for federal and state reporting (Gainful Employment and California Student Aid Commission) High School Last Attended: Maintained a locally developed list of top feeder high schools the transition to CCCApply has caused issues with these data
WHAT IS ON THE HORIZON? Student Application Information (cccApply) Institutional Research Federal, State, and Local College Reporting INCREASED REPORTING MANDATES: ACCOUNTABILITY Increased public reporting, scrutiny and use of these data Implications to student funding Imperative data and information are accurate, valid, and reliable IPEDS Gainful Employment Reporting (Disclosure and Enrollment) MIS Scorecard Salary Surfer Student Aid Commission SSSP and Student Equity Reporting Institutional Effectiveness Partnership Initiative Common Assessment and other statewide initiatives
