MONARCHY Definition: Ruling power in the hands of a single person Etymology: monos= single Arkhein= rule Draw a picture Why did it start? people paid taxes & obeyed rules to be protected by the king

MONARCHY Why did it decline? if no eldest son, advisors fought to become new monarch Current examples: Saudi Arabia-no limit, United Kingdom & Monaco constitutional monarchy* Is this a limited or unlimited form of government? Unlimited, unless it’s a constitutional monarchy * Constitutional monarchy-monarch is the head of state but elected officials run the government

OLIGARCHY Definition: Ruling power in the hands of a few leaders Etymology: oligos= few Arkhein= rule Draw a picture Why did it start? Inherited money because of wealthy family; some middle class

OLIGARCHY Why did it decline? rules enforced by military; citizens had little say in how things were run Current examples: Ancient Rome Is this a limited or unlimited form of government? Unlimited-because ordinary citizens have no power

TYRANNY Definition: Ruling power in the hands of an individual who seized control illegally Etymology: tyrannos= usurper with supreme power Draw a picture Why did it start? Seized power by force and reformed laws, helped poor

TYRANNY Why did it decline? citizens gave gifts but many became cruel, abusive, and greedy Current examples: Saddam Hussein-Iraq Is this a limited or unlimited form of government? Unlimited-tyrant can do what he wants

DEMOCRACY Definition: Ruling power in the hands of all the people Etymology: demos= people Kratos=power Draw a picture Why did it start? Officials did not have much individual power; elected every year

DEMOCRACY Why did it decline? IT IS STILL USED TODAY! Officials are paid so rich and poor can serve Current examples: USA, countries in Europe, India Is this a limited or unlimited form of government? Limited- people can elect new leaders if they don’t agree with decisions
