WHAT FORMS OF GOVERNMENT ARE OUT THERE? Exploring Governments Throughout the World

What is a “Democracy”?  1)Democracy is literally defined as “2)rule of the people”  This means that a 3)government that takes the form of a democracy is one in which all 4)citizens can exercise some kind of 5)political power  What are some examples of “political power” citizens can exercise? 6)Voting Running for 7)office 8)Contacting public officials

What is direct democracy?  9)Direct democracy is a government where the people have an 10)individual voice in 11)government. Government

The Advantages of Direct Democracy  Every 12)individual has a 13)voice in government  Works well in 14)small communities.  If we take a 15)vote in the classroom, we are acting as a direct 16)democracy

The Disadvantages of Direct Democracy  Too 17)many voices at 18)once  Only works in small 19)communities  Not 20)efficient

Representative Democracy  21)Representative democracy is a system where 22)individuals have a voice in government through 23)elected representatives Government

The advantages of representative democracy  24)Representatives are elected to represent the 25)common good instead of 26)individual interests  Representatives make the system more 27)efficient – it’s their job to know the 28)laws and the 29)system  People get a 30)say in government through someone 31)elected by the people  Works well in 31)large areas with diverse 32)populations

The disadvantages of representative democracy  33)Individuals must set aside their private 34)interests and personal concerns for the sake of the 35)whole  Rise of 36)Lobbyists  Citizen feeling 37)detached from government

Mind Map  Your topic is Representative Democracy  Fill in all six bubbles  Make sure to use 4 words or less per bubble

Communism  In a 38)communist government, the government 39)owns all means of production and eliminating 40)private property  This means that all things are 41)owned by the government and 42)shared by the people.  The 43)intention of this system is to ensure that everyone has 44)equal access and 45)property Vietnam

Monarchy A 46)monarchy has a king, queen, 47)emperor or empress. The ruling 48)position can be passed on to the ruler’s 49)heirs. In some 50)traditional monarchies, the monarch has 51)absolute power, like in Saudi Arabia. But a 52)constitutional monarchy, like the 53)United Kingdom, also has a 54)democratic government that limits the monarch's 55)control. Queen Elizabeth II King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia Image from the New York Post

Oligarchy A government in which 56)control is exercised by a 57)small group of 58)individuals whose authority generally is based on 59)wealth or 60)power This 61)power may not always be exercised 62)openly. Oligarchs sometimes prefer to remain the “power 63)behind the throne.” A modern example of 64)oligarchy could be seen in 65)South Africa during the 20 th century where oligarchy was based on 66)racism.

Autocracy A government ruled by a 67)single leader who has 68)unlimited power and denies peoples’ fundamental 69)rights. In a 70)military dictatorship, the army is in 71)control. One person is in 72)charge and often takes over by 73)force. Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Sadam Hussein were examples

What else is there?  Another type of government is 74)anarchy.  Anarchy is when there is a 75)complete breakdown of 76)government and the people fall into a start of chaos. There is no 77)organization or control.

What else is there?  78)Socialism is an economic system and 79)political theory  Socialism is an 80)economic system which Promotes collective or 81)governmental ownership Administration of the means of 82)production and distribution of goods by 83)government or collective groups This results in no 84)free, competitive, 85)private businesses
