Diamond smuggler (scaffolded)

This is a true story… In 1981 in Namibia (Southern Africa) a diamond smuggling team found an innovative way of getting their smuggled diamonds out of the country undetected… 2

How to smuggle diamonds  One member of the team gains employment at a diamond mine on the sorting conveyor.  Every so often, take a diamond and slip it into your pocket.  Take the diamond to the perimeter fence and drop it through at a set point (you will be searched every day on leaving the mine). 3

 Ensure that next to the diamond mine is a pilchard processing factory.  Another member of your team collects the diamonds from the drop point at the perimeter fence until they have enough for a box, then takes the diamonds to the processing plant and inserts the diamonds into the pilchards – one per fish.  Mark the box in some way so that it can be detected. Ensure that a member of your team is in employment at the destination point to pick up the marked box. 4

The tins were packed in a box for shipping. 1.What is the volume of the pilchard tin? 2.How many ‘diamond’ pilchards can you get in one tin? 3.What is the ‘diamond’ pilchard tin worth in South African Rand? 4.What is the ‘diamond’ pilchard tin worth in UK pounds? 5.When the smuggler was caught, the police thought she had been doing this for eight years. They estimated that she was smuggling one box per month out of the country. How much did she smuggle in Rand and also in UK pounds? Each pilchard has a volume of 95 cm 3. Note: only whole pilchards go in a can and the rest is tomato sauce Each diamond is worth 95,000 South African Rand The smuggler puts one diamond in each pilchard The smuggler then fills the tin with ‘diamond’ pilchards 35 cm 30 cm A standard pilchard tin has dimensions of 7.5cm × 10.5cm The diamond smuggler diameter length Name: Date: 1 South African Rand = 7p 5

Solution: Volume of pilchard tin= (7.5/2) 2 × π × 10.5 = cm 3 Number of pilchards in 1 tin= /95 = 4.88 (round to 4) Worth of one tin in Rand= 4 × = Worth of one tin in £= × 0.07 = £ Number of tins in 1 box= 32 Worth of 1 box in £= 32 × = £ Total value of smuggled diamonds= × 8 × 12 = £
