Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine in He has a family of seven brothers and sisters. He graduated from Bowdoin College after studying modern languages in Europe for three years. He married Mary Storer Potter in She died during a miscarriage in 1835 during his second trip to Europe just after his first book was published. He stayed in Switzerland and Germany for two years.
In 1836, Longfellow began teaching at Harvard and published his first book of poems at 32. His poetry was thought as inspiring to Americans. He then remarried with Frances Appleton. They had six children. One did not live to adulthood. In 1854, Longfellow decided to devote his time to poetry and quit his job at Harvard.
In 1861, Frances was sealing an envelope with wax when her dress caught fire. Longfellow ultimately failed at all his attempts to save his wife and died the next day. He did not publish anything for two years. He later died in 1882 just one month after his 75 th birthday.
