The Use of Milnacipran in Treating Fibromyalgia

MilnacipranMilnacipran, also known as milnacipran hydrochloride or Savella, helps to alleviate the pain caused by fibromyalgia through blocking the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. During two double-blind clinical trials, Milcanipran has been shown to decrease pain experienced by patients with fibromyalgia by as much as 30 percent. Furthermore, patients reporting the most improvement benefitted from the drug in as little as one week after initiating treatment.

Currently marketed by Forest Laboratories, Milnacipran was developed by Cypress Biosciences, Inc., with support from physician and pharmaceutical investor Lindsay Rosenwald, MD, who co-founded Opus Point Partners, Cougar Biotechnologies, Inc., and numerous other companies. Aided by his decades of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald played a major role in gaining FDA approval for Milnacipran in 2009, and has secured approval for the marketing of drugs for the treatment of leukemia, prostate cancer, obesity, and rheumatoid arthritis as well.
