leaving hawaiki. The people of Hawaiki have never stopped voyaging, they are always travelling from island to island, Later on, they started to travel beyond Hawaiki, when they started voyaging they only rowed up to a few hundred kilometres at a time. They soon came across the Tongan islands, Samoa, Niue, and Futunan, the first voyagers called the rest of their tribe and Polynesia started to grow.

Destinations. After reaching the islands of Futuna, Niue, and Samoa, the Polynesian voyagers came across other islands such as Rapanui (Easter island) before journeying to our beloved New Zealand. Although the men and women that stayed behind were making a different kind of journey, they were becoming tongans, humans, language and cultures were changing Soon after that the famous Busby made his theory of seven waka that settled in Aotearoa, their names were Aotea, Tanui, Kuaraupo, Matatua, Te Arawa, and Takitimu.

Navigation. When rowing across the ocean, the tribes used the help of mauri navigators, these men (or woman) helped the tribe know what direction to row. The navigators used common cultural techniques to navigate, they relied on, the sun, the stars, the migrating whales and birds, and finally, the ocean swells and currants. The navigators worked day and night trying to lead the boat, the result: little time to rest, but after all, they do chose the strongest men to row in the waka, and they would probably be used to it by then.
