It is Responsible to Know How Our Plants Grow! Plants need several things to help them grow: Room to grow, the right temperature, light, water, air, nutrients, and time. Once the plants are grown they are made up of several parts: root, stem, leaf, petal, and flower. What would these parts look like? Can you identify the parts on a plant? Let’s see on the next page! K-2

Directions: Use the words in the box below to label the different parts of a plant. (primaryresources.co.uk) K-2

We can practice being responsible by taking care of our Earth. Most of what we throw into the trash ends up in large landfills of waste. Many products we use can be recycled or composted, rather than being thrown away. Recycle means to use old or useless things to make something new and useful. For instance, a plastic bottle can be recycled into a new bottle or other plastic container. Composting means turning household and lawn waste (like leaves, egg shells and apple rinds) into new, rich soil. The materials decay and break down to create healthy soil to grow food, plants and flowers. Use the next activity to determine items for Recycle, Compost, or Trash 3-5

RECYCLE, COMPOST or TRASH? RECYCLE COMPOST TRASH __________________ ____________________________________ 3-5 Glass Bottle Used Tissue Soda Can Lawn Clippings Banana Peel Diapers Newspaper Pizza Box Carrot Peelings Coffee Grounds Milk Carton Magazine Stickers Plastic Water Bottle In the activity below, put the waste item in the correct place. List the items under the appropriate waste bin. What happens to trash when you throw it away? What happens to waste when you recycle it? What happens to waste when you compost it?

Let’s talk about ENERGY! We can practice responsibility by identifying ways to renew, conserve, and use energy more efficiently. Renewable energy is energy that comes from resources which are naturally replenished. Energy efficiency looks at ways we can reduce the amount of energy required to provide products and services. Energy conservation refers to reducing the amount of energy services we use. Use the next activity to discuss renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, and energy conservation in your classroom. 6-8

Utilizing the energy pyramid, have students identify examples of energy sources, ways to use energy more efficiently, and how we can conserve energy. An example pyramid is provided. Use the blank pyramid to express students ideas visually or create your own classroom energy pyramid! 6-8
