Powers and Exponents Intro to Algebra Farris
I can write and evaluate expressions using exponents.
Definitions Exponent -Tells how many times a number is used as a factor. Power – A number that is expressed using an exponent. Base – The number that is multiplied.
First Power When a number or variable is raised to the first power, the exponent is not usually written. 5 1 is written as 5
Of course we HAVE to have music! Oh Mrs. Farris – WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!!!!!!!
Let’s Do it!
Order of Operations with Exponents Step 1 – Simplify the expressions inside grouping symbols first Step 2 – EVALUATE ALL POWERS Step 3 – Do all multiplication and division left to right Step 4 – Do all addition and subtraction left to right
Evaluate Algebraic Expressions x 2 + y 3 if x = 6 and y = -2 (a + b) 3 if a = 5 and b = -2
