Microsoft Surface 3 The Surface 3 is a 2-in-1 tablet with detachable keyboard with a stylus. It combines the benefits of a laptop with those of a tablet. The Surface 3 will be utilized by students in the classroom for engagement and in order to personalize learning.

Evaluation of Surface 3 & Central High The Surface 3 would support students in the classroom. Teachers and students would receive appropriate training in using the technology. Digital literacy is a district level goal for students. Teachers could use the Surface 3 in order to both engage students and differentiate their learning.

Age & Grade Levels The Surface 3 itself can be adapted for all students, but we are requesting implementation in the high school levels. In order to be college and career ready, our students need experience in using technology as part of the learning process. Eventually, we would like to see a one-to-one implementation of the Surface 3 in Central High School. At first, we wish to purchase carts with class sets of Surface Pro 4 for each department.

Equitable Access A classroom set would allow for each teacher in the department to check out the Surface Pro 4 cart. All students would have access to the technology. A one-to-one implementation would benefit all students. No student would be hindered by cost. While some students may not have WiFi or Internet access at home, Connect2Compete does provide cheap internet to Bibb County families. Additionally, teachers would need to plan for at home assignments that could be completed without internet access.

Cost The Surface3 retails at $499; however, Microsoft creates an education only Surface 3 with 32GB and 2GB of RAM for a reduced pricing. We would want the student bundle that include the keyboard cover and stylus, at a cost of $650 to schools. Replacement keyboards and stylus may need to be purchased. A class set would include 28 Surface 3 (full cart) for 5 departments (Math, ELA, Science, Social Students, PEC) at an estimated cost of $100,000.

Cost Last year, the district installed computer carts of Dell computers in several middle and high schools in Bibb County. We would ask that the local school has a voice in the devices purchased for the school.

Equipment and Software The school currently has 5 carts left over from the old netbooks no longer in use. These can be used to store the Surface Pro 4 to cut costs. All schools have recently been upgraded for WiFi, with access points in each classroom. Students and faculty already have access to Microsoft365 for saving files/storage and working in Microsoft Office.

Professional Learning Since the district utilizes Microsoft365, a few 2 hour long seminar can be requested through Microsoft in Education. Technical Support Teachers have already been trained on Microsoft365 and Safari Montage. This training will need to be re- delivered to all students during the hour-long CARE (Chargers Advising, Remediation, and Enrichment). Teachers and students will need some training with the Surface 3. A departmental representative from each department, the media specialist, and an administrator will receive department specific training, which they can then redeliver to their departments.

Limitations Since we will just have one cart per a department, we will not see the full benefits of a one-to-one implementation. Teachers will need to purposefully plan for using the Surface 3. Utilizing technology is a district non- negotiable by the superintendent. Teachers will need continuing support in using the devices. Student privacy concerns will need to be addressed when student work is shared online during the planning process of a teachers’ lesson.

Potential Funding Sources Bibb County Public Schools routinely commits funds for the improvement of the technology infrastructure in schools Central High is a Title 1 school, and according to Title 1 expenditure guidelines, computers and accessories are acceptable expenditures if they are being used to meet the academic goals of the student population. Teachers and administrators could endeavor to write grant proposals to secure funding. A recently pass E-SPLOST promised investment in technology in our schools.

How Could This Technology be Used to Differentiate Instruction? Teachers would be able to use the capabilities of application run on the Surface 3 or design lessons used on the Surface 3 in order to differentiate and personalize the learning for students. The Surface 3 also eases the formative assessment process used in analyzing student data for differentiation.

How Could This Technology Promote Communication? Students would have access to technology that would allow them to communicate and collaborate with peers, their teachers, and outside of their own classroom. Teachers would be encouraged for the classrooms to have a digital presence online as students have greater access to this technology.

Research From a Microsoft-commissioned study: ation/2015/03/26/pen-keyboard-voice-touch-computer- interfaces-and-their-impact-on-learning/ In a Microsoft commissioned study, the researcher discovered that “although a keyboard might seem like the best tool for learning because it reduces student effort, studies have found that typing can actually undermine the learning that occurs when more effort is expended.” In comparison, using “pen input can increase a student's ability to produce appropriate ideas, solve problems correctly, learn during note-taking and knowledge creation, and make accurate inferences about information.” The study showed that “students can perform 9-38% better when using pen input on a computer, compared with keyboard input…across [all subjects, including] mathematics, science, language arts, and everyday reasoning.”

Implementation Plan Summer 2016: Purchase of Surface 3s, Professional learning for department leads Fall 2016 (Pre-Planning): Departmental leads re-deliver PL, administration review technology initiative and non-negotiables August 2016: Student introduction to devices during Advisement September - December 2016: Teachers will utilize the Surface 3s in one course a week for student learning, working alongside of media specialist and department lead for collaboration January 2017 – begin discussions and analyze data for feasibility and effectiveness of a 1-1 program for next school year

Reflections I originally began looking at the Surface because of the frustration I have with having just laptops in my room or checking out an iPad cart – I wanted to find a device that could serve both roles. Many of my students learning math by doing math, and I really like the tablet/stylus piece of the Surface. I could see it being used across all subject areas. I also gained some insight into what goes on in the planning and implementation process with technology in schools. I know that a true proposal would have to be much more thorough because of the cost involved.
