Teaching digital: Exploring students’ experience with online books and reference sources Irina Holden Information Literacy and Science Outreach Librarian University at Albany, SUNY

What I teach: Background info O Information Literacy in Mathematics and Statistics, one-credit, eight-week course (beginning Spring 2015) O Previously taught Information Literacy in the Sciences (Fall 2006-Spring 2015) O Subject-related instruction on demand O Freshman seminar on sustainability and science literacy, UFSP 100 (fall , 2016)

Librarians teach… library catalogs: Familiar scenario At the beginning of the library instruction class, whether it’s a one-shot workshop or a credit course, students are usually introduced to appropriate tools that could be used to locate books: O Library catalogs, including local catalog (Minerva at UAlbany) and WorldCat O Discovery tool (eDiscover at UAlbany) as yet another option to search for books

E-books and other online stuff O Often catalog search will result in online materials, including e-books O Sometimes e-books are sought on purpose to avoid visit to the library O More and more reference books are available as online choices instead of shrinking print collection O Good thing?

Teaching strategy included: O In-class exercises on searching Minerva and WorldCat O Handout in Blackboard that demonstrates how the students can start searching for e- booksBlackboard O Homework: students are required to find, cite and annotate a book and a reference source

Check-in with the classroom: O “Our search started with our group looking for a book and reference source. These were the hardest sources to find…” O “It was a little bit more challenging than we thought. At times, we had difficulty finding research on our topic.” O “We generally found there to be a much greater supply of electronic information on our topic than print.”

What else can be done? O Tough question but it is necessary to continue seeking answers O There is always room for improvement! O Thank you for listening! Please get in touch! O
