State Specific Training Module for (State) 1

Purpose of this Module This module will provide some general information that TSPs need to conduct conservation planning in our state. This information is general in nature so the TSP may need to follow up with additional reading or training to make sure they have the knowledge, skill, licenses and certifications to conduct conservation planning in this state. 2

Review of State Laws This state requires that the competence of all nutrient management planners be certified by the State Department of Conservation. Individuals certified as nutrient management consultants in state A and state B are eligible for certification in this state. Certificates are valid for two years and can be renewed on or before the expiration date. 3

Review of State FOTG Requirements Vegetative Practices Wind can be a major factor in establishing vegetation in this state. Seedings and plantings should be protected from the wind. Planting dates in the drier regions of the state should be delayed to July when it is more likely to receive rainfall. 4

Review of Important Resource Issues A protected species of upland bird, the Lesser Prairie Chicken, is common in the western region of the state. The bird may be present on range or crop land uses and impacts to the species should be a consideration when planning within this area. Contact the NRCS State Biologist or the State Wildlife Department for additional information on planning consideration for the Lesser Prairie Chicken. 5

Review of Major Land Uses or Agronomic Practices This state is roughly 50% native range and 50% cropland. About 20% of the cropland acres are managed for hay. The south central region of the state is irrigated by sprinklers utilizing shallow wells. The native rangeland in this state is primarily mid to tall grass species. The primary grazers are cattle. 6

Review of Major Land Ownership Approximately 40% of this state is public lands. Most of the public land is managed for multiple use, and leases by individual ranchers is common. Conservation planning on private land may include a public component, however the opportunity for private individuals to construct permanent conservation practices on public lands is limited. 7

Expected TSP Workflow The State Resource Conservationist (SRC) will be responsible for reviewing TSP conservation planning for the National Planner Certification. Subsequent conservation plans will be reviewed by the District Conservationist (DC) at the local USDA Service Center. The SRC will conduct plan reviews for TSP planner certification renewals. TSPs will work with the local District Conservationist to make sure the proper environmental evaluations (NRCS.CPA.52) are completed. 8
