The Stories We Tell Something happens…and we tell a story River Stories: Stories of personal growth and transformation  Recognition of your role, responsibility, and resiliency in the story Rut Stories: Stories that make you feel stuck and are emotionally draining  Perceived as outside of your control, others at fault, not your responsibility Why is it that we are Velcro for negative experiences and Teflon for positive ones?

The Stories We Tell River Story “Those parents don’t care about their children. She never comes to school rested and prepared.” Rut Story: “I wonder if there is a lot of stress in the home right now. Maybe the parents are struggling with long hours at work or financial issues.”  What river and rut stories do you tell?  Can you recognize a rut from river story?  Are you taking responsibility in your stories?  Are you focusing on what’s in your control?  Do you feel drained or energized by the stories you tell?

Focus on the Bright Spots Focus on what’s working and the positive. “What we pay attention to tends to grow, so why not grow the good stuff?”  Set your intentions before teaching, meetings, conferences. Declaring intentions helps set a direction for how you want things to go. Actions and words will likely align with your intentions.  Find your students’ strengths and build on them. Then carefully and strategically introduce missing skills.  What are your intentions for teaching and learning for the rest of the year?
