Hanna Baynham and Lexie Seidel

The setting is based in the future, on Earth, in a utopian society. Their society is perfect and has many rules to make sure everything is in order. This society lives in provinces, they live in houses called Borough’s. Cassia’s match banquet is located in the banquet hall, the citizens get around by Air-train. Cassia and her family live in the Oria Province. The setting also occurs in the forest, Banquet hall, the Reyes’ house, Grandfather’s house, the game center, and the pool. This picture reminds me of the setting because it is in a future time with a lot of high tech. technology.

Cassia- Cassia is a protagonist and the main character. Cassia is is the eldest child in her family with one younger brother, Bram. She loves him very much and would do anything to help him. She is 17 years old and follows rules from the society very well. Because she is 17,she has her Match Banquet. Her match is her best friend, Xander Carrow. Cassia is very observant, but is afraid to wonder. She is very kind and curious and asks many questions. The Society has strict rules not to show affection in public or talk about other peoples Matches, but Cassia does anyway. Cassia doesn’t try, but continues to break rules of the society and is beginning to feel rebellious about all of the rules. Cassia is a beautiful girl. She is tall, has dark brown hair, and bright green eyes. She has a very light skin tone. Dynamic character P.S.- Mrs. Booth told us we could only do three characters because the other characters aren’t major enough to have that much information on

Ky Markham- Ky Markham is a major character. He is 17 years old and an Aberration. An aberration is someone who has committed an infraction and has to leave their home province. When he was about 10 years old, his parents were killed, so he had to move out of his province. This also means that Ky can never have a match, artifact, or life saving pills, that most other people have. Ky is very dark and mysterious and tends to not show a lot of emotions. He has never felt that he fit in. At an earlier age than most people, he got his vocation, or his job. Ky has become really close to Cassia and might be starting to fall in love with her. Ky is very tall, with dark brown hair and his eyes tend to change with the weather. He has a medium skin tone and is very strong. Static character

Xander Carrow- Xander Carrow is a main character. He is 17 years old and Cassia’s best friend. He was Matched with Cassia and loves her very much. Xander would do anything for Cassia, even if it meant he was comitting an infraction. He is very smart and sweet. He is very handsome and very popular. Xander is courageous and even heroic if the circumstances call for it. Xander knows Cassia better than anyone else and can tell if she is hurt, sad, confused, or any other emotion there is. Xander is tall with bright, blue eyes, and blonde hair. He has a very light skin tone. Static character

 Cassia is matched with her best friend, Xander  Another face pops up on port screen when she puts in her microcard  Grandfather dies  Cassia’s father gets caught for loosing their grandfathers DNA.  Ky is in Cassia’s hiking class  Cassia becomes close friends with Ky. Grandfather’s Death: Hiking Class Rising Action- The plot builds up to the climax

The climax is when Cassia starts to fall for Ky and he starts giving Cassia pieces of his lost past. The officials starts telling Cassia and Ky what they are doing is illegal and lets them off on a warning. They threaten to send Ky back to the outer provinces. Next, the government takes all of the citizens artifacts. The one thing that makes them all unequal. Then, the government sends some officials to chop down all the maple trees and Cassia’s mother thinks of this as a warning. Ky teaches Cassia how to write in cursive, this is illegal. Cassia is falling for Ky Climax- The turning point of the story or the peak Cassia learning to write in cursive

 The hiking class ends early  Ky and Cassia reach the top of the hill  Cassia tells Ky she loves him and kisses him.  Ky is taken away to fight an unknown war with the outer provinces.  An official tells Cassia that putting Ky in the matching pool wasn’t a mistake and that it was an experiment. Falling Action- The beginning of the end When Cassia tells Ky she loves him

 Man vs. Self- When Cassia starts to fall for Ky. This is a problem because she is already matched with Xander.  Man vs Society- When Cassia starts to feel that it is wrong to have the society choose who you marry, what you eat, how much you eat, what you wear, and where you can and cannot go based on who you are. This is a conflict because this is very much against anyone's belief of the society and everyone believes in the society because of what they have given them  Man vs Man- When Cassia’s father looses grandfathers DNA sample. This is a problem because the DNA sample is important to research and possibly the development of eternal life. This is man vs man because before grandfather died, he asked Cassia’s father to get rid of it, he wanted to die on his own terms.

 Theme- Theme is the lesson or the moral of a story  One example of the theme in this story is that government or the main source of power isn’t always right, fair, or the right way to go.  “If we could change things, in time, maybe…maybe we could all choose.” (p. 354)  Cassia starts to feel rebellious after the official tells her, her an Ky are just an experiment.  At the end of Matched Cassia and her family are sent to the outer provinces of a different province.  Cassia has fallen for Ky Markham.  Cassia tells Xander at the end of all of this, that he could still be the one.  Xander is going to help Cassia find Ky by giving her instructions on how to use the compass and giving her a lot of blue tablets-which the effect is unknown.

 The moods of the story differ at different times. In the beginning, when Cassia is on her way to the Matching ceremony the mood is happy and exciting.  Then, when Ky Markham teaches Cassia to write, the mood becomes a bit rebellious because they are doing illegal things.  When Cassia tells Ky she loves him, the mood turns romantic but at the same time frantic because Xander also loves Cassia.  Near the end of the book, when Cassia is getting sent away, the mood turns sad because she is moving away from her friends and Ky.

 Cover picture-  readingtopenguins.blogspot.com readingtopenguins.blogspot.com  Cassia’s Picture-   Ky’s Picture   Xander’s Picture   Society picture-   Instructions-   Blue Pills-   Train-   Luggage-   Tombstone   Hiking Class   Heart   I love you   Love   Happy sad face- 
