Chapter 6 - Earthquakes  What is an earthquake? An earthquake is the vibration or movement of the earth produced by the rapid release of energy in wave.
Causes of earthquakes An earthquake is defined as the shaking of the earth’s crust Can be large or small Earthquakes occur when energy is suddenly released.
Divergent boundaries = plates diverge (move apart) convergent boundaries = plates converge (come together) transform boundaries = plates slide past each.

Conclusions School equipment can be used to detect and characterize distant earthquakes. We don’t know how to predict earthquakes. Can the next generation of scientists find a way? Until then, rigorous building codes save lives.
