Data Management Planning Joy Davidson

They typically want a short (c.1-2pp) statement covering: What data will be created (format, types, volume) Standards and methodologies to be used (incl. metadata) How ethics and Intellectual Property will be addressed Plans for data sharing and access Strategy for long-term preservation

Consider adding in a grant identifier that can be followed through the system

Funders have DMP requirements

DCC provides details about requirements

Researchers can select from funder templates, institutional templates, and discipline specific templates

These are all sections the researcher needs to complete.

These are sections that could draw upon boiler plate text developed by at the Research Group/School/College/ Central levels See DCC table for overview of funders’ requirements

Researchers may need input from Library and/or Repository staff here Researchers will need to complete this section

May need input from Ethics Committee or Data Protection Office here.

May need input from IP office or legal experts in the institution

Most funders have expectations about when data should be made available.

Check DCC policy table for funder requirements

Funders have sharing and access requirements

Researchers will need input from School/College/Central IT services for these sections.

Check to see if there are external data centres that could be used Researchers will need to decide what they need to keep to validate research publications and findings or what might have longer term value

Guidance on selection and appraisal

Funders may have data centres for deposit

Look for other data centres that may accept data

What will the University provide? What additional costs need to be added in to the grant?

Funders may cover some of the costs

Will the grants team be involved in monitoring adherence to DMP? If so, how will this be done?

Remember! Researchers should add in any contacts who may need to contribute towards the development or the review the plan: Ethics committee, IT services, Library staff

Once the project is funded Encourage researchers to update their pre-award DMP with more detail Include new grant identifier if necessary

Grant office records You may wish to duplicate the DMP to ensure a copy remains with the grants team

You may not need as much detail You can select which fields to export for grants team requirements. You can select format for export (e.g., PDF) Includes time stamp

The DCC offers guidance, examples and tools to help with compliance

Thanks! Any questions?
