Department of Specialized Instruction & Student Services Strategic Plan – Initiative 5

Building on what the district is currently doing, what input does the PAC have that will lead to the district having additional opportunities to collaborate with parent groups?

Survey (coming soon) Why Choose BPS What are you looking for? Communication – A lot of information – is it being read Mental Health Programs Engage – Get parents involved Parent Involvement = Student Success Part time Parent Engagement Specialist Position (currently on hold) Software Programs Let’s Talk Ok To Share Expand on Early Childhood Development within BPS

Standardize District/ School Websites Information can be organized in one location school websites are organized in a consistent manner Have one common portal for classroom information (each teacher's website)....with link available from School homepage If there's not a good K-12 option, separate the portal K-5 & 6-12 (to help with Middle School to High School consistency, improving engagement and ease of transition Schools should create a spot on their local website to highlight school specific events/organizations Reach out to all students/ clubs sports should be all inclusive Create mobile options for parent engagement Myschoolanywhere Create "New Parent Onboarding" procedure that is consistent among all buildings Parents new to the district are provided with a list of resources and groups where they can get involved. (same for parents new to IEP process) Provide a universal district calendar

Create a place on the district website and/or local school websites for parents to: Post ideas/suggestions for improvements Ask questions Anonymous or request contact information for follow-up Allow option to make posts public so they can be seen by other parents Post reference material, content from workshops (e.g. Parent Camp) to the district website for those that could not attend Post links to Webinars by topic (Grade levels, Academic vs Social/Emotional) Provide links to parents Education Sites - like Oakland Schools, Michigan Alliance for Families, etc. Create a parent group with representation from all parent groups in BPS (not just PTAs)

Communicate Better with all Families/ Be more transparent Explain what District is doing to drive changes e-News – Dedicated section for Department of Specialized Instruction and Student Services Principal communications Provide links to Michigan legislature Tri-County Alliance

Address at the building level with support from BPS Take the “clique” stigmatism out of building PTAs Have principals/ teachers recommend Give everyone opportunity to be involved More intentional outreach to parents (not typical players) Build leadership within each building New Parent orientation process where parents can be set up with a "Mentor" to help guide them trough the first months/year?
