TERRI HARKEY IPS/ Region 10 Tech Conference 2016 Coding

What is Coding? Coding is giving instructions to a digital device, using language the device understands so the device does what you want it to do.

Why Should We Teach Coding? Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path. – Shannon Miller

Why Should We Teach Coding?

Coding in Texas Code.org

My Goal For The Year Help students understand that they have control over what something does by what they tell it to do. Whether by dropping blocks, drawing on a paper, drawing on an iPad, using arrows… they can control a device, game, app, robot…

How I Accomplished This Goal Maker Mondays (TechKnow Club, Engineering Club) Maker Days in the Library Hour of Code Maker Monday Open House (Parent Involvement) Help Teachers See How Easy It Is To Incorporate Into the Classroom

Coding with Bloxels Bloxels Bloxels helps kids achieve their nearly universal desire to create video games (seriously, just ask any kid), rather than just playing them. By using the unique combination of hands-on toys and their love and understanding of classic video games, we've made video game creation accessible and fun for all ages.

Coding With Websites Botlogic BotLogic is an educational puzzle game that challenges kids and adults to tackle complex logic problems while teaching valuable programming concepts. Using simple commands (and eventually code), players program their bots to navigate through progressively challenging mazes. As their skills improve, players earn rewards by using the fewest number of commands and go head-to-head with friends in programming tournaments. BotLogic.us is all about helping children and adults to develop and maintain strong logic and spatial reasoning skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.

Coding Without a Computer or Device CS Unplugged Each Unplugged activity is available to download in PDF format, with full instructions and worksheets. Background sections explain the significance of each activity to computer science, and answers are provided for all problems. All you need for most of these activities are curiosity and enthusiasm. There are photos and videos showing some of the activities in action, and we’ve collected links to other useful resources.
