Purpose This lesson explains sound nutritional information based on the best recommendation from organizations such as The National Institutes of Health.

1. Identify the 6 nutrients your body requires, the good sources of these nutrients, and what each nutrient provides for a high quality, healthy lifestyle. 2. Determine the healthy choices for meals for one day. 3. Describe the diet athletes should follow to ensure peak performance.

4. Explain how to use the Nutrition Facts label found on most food items. 5. Describe the importance of water to the body. 7. Describe the possible effects of a diet high in fat and cholesterol. 8. Explain why salt, sugar, and caffeine should be used in moderation.

 Nutrition is the science of nourishing the body properly to perform our best.  It is very important that young adults have at least a basic understanding of nutrients, how to obtain them, and how to control fat.

 Carbohydrates are the starches and sugars found in fruits, grains, and vegetables.  Simple carbohydrates are sugars, the most important being glucose.  Complex carbohydrates are starches which are made up of combinations of simple sugars.

 Fats, or ____, perform the vital roles of maintaining body temperature, insulating body organs, providing the body with stored energy, and carrying the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K to the cells.  Triglycerides are the primary fats in the foods we eat, as well as the fats stored in body tissue.  You must burn 3,500 calories to loose one pound of fat. lipids
