APP in Science – developing formative assessment in Science Pilot project: QCA, Cheshire and Cornwall LAs

Aim To develop a set of materials and strategies to support teachers in assessing the progress made by students – following the work done in English & Maths

Why? Effective teacher assessment makes it easier to give effective feedback Effective teacher assessment informs future teaching Effective teacher assessment may eventually replace SATs

Experience in schools Using the materials is a developmental process Assessment is done using a new approach – using strands of enquiry and knowledge & understanding Having well phrased criteria is essential Teachers quickly learned what kinds of learning activities also make good assessment activities

Key message for LAs It is essential for quality materials to be animated in schools for teachers to become more competent and confident
