Welcome to our Insect Power Point Presentation by Mrs. McNamara’s Second Grade Students Goodnoe Elementary School June 7, 2016

About our Projects One day we found a strange insect while we were working in the Goodnoe Garden. We wanted to find out more about the insect so we looked in nonfiction books and on the internet to learn about it. We took notes to keep track of what we read. We made many projects with the information we learned. One of them is a power point we will present to you. Later we will share our diagrams, trading cards, research reports, riddles, poems, and models with you too. We are glad you are here and hope you learn a lot about insects today.

The Insects We Found in the Goodnoe Garden Grasshopper Ladybug Luna Moth Mosquito Praying Mantis Ant Bee Cricket Dragonfly Firefly

And now… The Insect Facts

By: Dean And Maximilian The amazing ant By: Dean And Maximilian D: Hi I'm Dean and my partner is Maximilian and we researched the ANT. M: Did you know that the ANT can fit lots of food in their tiny abdomen?

Ant’s Physical Description Size: 1 inch Colors: brown, black Head, thorax, abdomen Antennae: 2 Eyes: 2 Pinchers Legs: 6 Wings: 0-2 Maximilian I am going to tell you about the ant’s appearance. The ant is 1 inch. Ants can be brown or black. The body parts are Head, thorax, and Abdomen. They have 2 antennae. They have 2 compound eyes . Their mouth is called mandibles which is sometimes called pinchers. They have 6 legs. They have 0-2 wings. The females have wings and the males do not.

protection of AN Ant ANTHILL PREDATORS DEAN I’m going to tell you about the protection of the ant. If something is chasing an ant, it will run into its ant hole. This is a safe place for it because most enemies are too big to fit in the little hole opening. Only other ants can get into the ant hill. The ants have predators known as badgers, praying mantises, humans, and other ants.

more amazing ant facts Strong Small brain BOTH: Here are some more amazing ant facts. M: Ants can lift 50 times their own weight D: Ants have a small brain but they are very smart.

Thank you for listening Maximilian: We hoped you learned a lot about the ant. Dean: Thank you for listening.

Researched by Lorelei and Molly Brilliant Bees L: I am Loreli and this is my partner Molly. We researched the bee. M: Did you know that bees have 2 ways to protect themselves? L: We’ll tell you about these defenses later in the power point. Researched by Lorelei and Molly

Physical Description of a Bee 5 eyes 2 antennae Mouth: proboscis 6 legs 4 wings Yellow and black Lorelei I am going to tell you about the physical description of a bee. The bee has 5 eyes. Two are on the sides and three are on the top. Bees have two antennae on the top of their head. The bee has a mouth called a proboscis that helps it eat. The bee has 6 legs. The bee has 4 wings. The wings are see through. The bee has yellow and black stripes.

Life Cycle of a Bee Complete metamorphosis Egg Larva Pupa Adult MOLLY I am going to tell you about the life cycle of a bee. Bees go threw a complete metamorphosis. The bee starts out as an egg. Then it changes into a larva. In the larva stag it molts and molts. Then it becomes a pupa. In the pupa stage it sleeps and changes into an adult bee. The adult stag is the final stage of the bee’s life cycle.

I Bet You Did Not Know Have special stripes Sting you Size of a peanut Stay in hive for the winter Both: Here are some Fun facts about bees. M: Bees stripes are special because they help protect them. Predators see the stripes and stay away. L: The second way bees protect themselves is by stinging. This tells you that you are doing something the bees do not like. M: Bees are the size of a peanut. L: Bees stay in the hive for the winter time.

Lorelei: We hope you learned a lot about the bee. Molly: Thank you for listening.

Chirping Crickets By Ella and Kyleigh K: Hi I’m Kyleigh and this is my partner Ella. E: We’re going to tell you about crickets. K: Did you know that crickets are great camouflagers?

Physical Description of a Cricket 5 eyes Mandibles 6 legs 2 wings 2 antennas Kyleigh I am going to tell you about what a cricket looks like. Crickets have 5 eyes. 2 are compound eyes and 3 are simple eyes. They have mandibles to help them eat. They have six legs. The back 2 are for jumping. They have 2 wings to help them chirp. They rub the wings together to make the chirping sound. Crickets have 2 antenna.

Life Cycle of a Cricket Egg Nymph Adult Attracting a mate ELLA I am going to tell you about the life cycle of a cricket. The first stage is an egg. The egg is laid underground. The next stage is the nymph. The nymph looks like a mini adult. To become an adult, it molts and molts 7 or 8 times . And finally it is an adult . And now it’s time for the mating. The males make the chirping sound to attract a female. Then the life cycle starts all over again.

Amazing Fun Facts Making a chirping sound Green, brown, and black E: Here are some more amazing fun facts about the cricket. K: The crickets use their wings to make the chirping sound. They rub the scrapper with the file. E: Crickets can be all sorts of colors including Black, brown, or green.
