THE ORGANISATION 1.Describe the organisation (what is it, where is it and who is the service for) 2.Describe the premises – how many rooms, buildings, floors, playgrounds, play areas, gardens etc If possible draw a plan of it 3.What facilities does your organisation have? For example: a canteen, kitchen, staff room, baby room

4.How many staff are there? Part-time and full-time 5.What are their different job titles? 6.For each job you have listed in question 5 identify the qualifications they need 7.Look at the jobs you have identified in question 5. How do these people work together e.g. the teaching assistant supports the teacher

(If possible, ask your workplace if you can have a copy of their prospectus – this could really help.) 8. What services does the organisation provide? For example: full and part-time child care 9. What are the needs of your clients? Eg physical needs (food, warmth). Remember PIES

WORK EXPERIENCE SURVEY THE MAIN CLIENTS USING THE SERVICE AND THEIR NEEDS –Break their needs down into smaller sections e.g. physical and then ask questions about food, heating etc. –The more detailed the survey the higher the grade you can get.

Draw an organisational chart for your work experience placement. You should start with the most senior job down to the most junior.

FUNDING Find out how your organisation is funded – you do not need to know exactly how much money they have but you do need to know where the money they have to spend comes from. You should include fund raising activities and grants. If you are in a private nursery or nursing home try to find out how much people pay to stay there. If you are in a playgroup try to find out how much the parents pay for their children to attend.

INTERVIEW This interview will take time. Please make sure you allow enough time to do this, as it is really important that you do it properly. JOB ROLES Direct care roles are jobs where the practitioner (person) is in personal contact with the client. Examples include: nurse, doctor, social worker, teacher, care assistant, nursery nurse. Choose one direct job role in your organisation.

Interview this person and find out the following: 1.Name: 2.Job title: 3.Describe your job role (what do you do): 4.What qualifications and training do you have e.g. a degree, NVQ level 2 5.What qualities do you need to do this job e.g. patience, good communication skills, sense of humour

6. What skills do you need to do this job? 7. Describe your daily routine (a bit like a timetable for the day) 8. When you are working with clients how do you make sure that you treat everybody equally? 9. Do you have an: Equal Opportunities Policy Confidentiality Policy Child Protection Policy Racism Policy Bullying Policy Get copies of these if you can.

10. How do staff recognise that different people have different needs and backgrounds (diversity)? 11. What kinds of confidential issues does the workplace have to deal with? 12. How do you maintain confidentiality? Where are files, letters etc stored? Are computers password protected? 13. How do you build relationships with your clients? Can you give some examples e.g. group building activities

14. How do you promote and support the rights of each individual? Can you give examples? 15. How do you make sure you communicate well with clients? Can you give examples? 16. Why do you think effective communication is important when you are trying to develop relationships with colleagues, clients, and their parents?

17. How are your clients protected from abuse or bullying? Can you give examples? 18. How do the clients who use your service access it e.g. contact the organisation themselves, through a friend. 19. Are there any barriers which could affect the clients accessing the service – barriers could include:

Possible barriers: Physical barriers – stairs, lack of lifts Psychological barriers – fear, not wanting to be looked after Financial barriers – cannot afford bus fares, or have to pay for the service Geographical barriers – live in the country, no buses Cultural/language barriers Resources barriers – lack of staff, lack of information about services

You need to find out what the organisation does to help their clients overcome these barriers.
