New Politics

Conservatism After a long run of liberal presidents, America turned to a more Conservative President –Ronald Reagan Liberals –Government involvement in the economy –Should help disadvantaged Americans –Free speech and privacy –Tax the rich, help the poor Conservatives –Support original constitution –Economy should regulate itself –Oppose high taxes –Religious faith

Conservative rise Because of the issues in our society, conservatives gained more support in politics –Government intervention had caused the issues in our society –JFK, Johnson, Carter were all liberals The people looked to Reagan to change around society

Reagan Ronald Reagan –Became an sports broadcaster then an actor President of Screen Actors Guild –Became governor of California in 1966 –Ran for President in 1980 Easily defeated Carter Blamed the Government for a lot of the problems –Told the people they should have pride in America

Reagan Had to address the economy –Two ideas Monetarism –Too much money in circulation, raise interest rates Supply-side economics –Taxes were too high, lower them –Combined the two ideas Became known as Reaganomics Passed a 25% tax cut

Reagan Without Taxes, programs had to be cut –Fought with congress, but eventually they agreed Cut many social programs Deregulated many businesses –Let them compete with each other, rather than the government Economy responded to Reagan’s ideas –Income increased, unemployment went down, sales of goods went up
