ON THE PILL JANETH SOTO GATEWAY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

HOW DO BIRTH CONTROL PILLS AFFECT A WOMAN’S BODY? How do oral contraceptives affect a woman's usual system? How exactly do they work? What are the positive and negative side effects? My thoughts on Birth Control Pills (BCP)

SOOOO HOW DO BCP WORK?  Most are a combination of Estrogen and Progestin  They prevent ovulation  Are taken everyday at the same time to be more effective

BCPS EFFECTS ON A WOMAN  There are both negative and positive effects of birth control  They can have different effects depending on a woman's medical history and lifestyle

THE BAD...   Mild side effects like headaches, nausea, bloating, spotting, vomiting, breast tenderness, and weight change  The combined pill also increases chances of blood clotting, heart attacks, and strokes  Birth control pills also slightly increase the chance of breast cancer(10 or more years)  Increased chance of cervical cancer, the longer the usage the higher the risk 5-9 years 3x, 10+ years 4x

THE GOOD!  No ovulation, no pregnancy, no babies!  Regulates a woman's menstrual cycle, helps with irregular or painful periods  Actually reduces the risk of some types of cancers like endometrial and ovarian cancer  Helps with severe acne

THEY ARE A VIABLE OPTION FOR WOMEN  Despite the negative side effects, they do more good than harm  It is an incredibly effective form of birth control can be up to 99.9% effective (if taken properly)  17.1% of women ages in the U.S. use them

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE PILL? Do you think the benefits outweigh the risks?
