Wireless Expansion Update Greg Redder Academic Computing & Networking Services 2/17/09

Agenda Review Plan Equipment status Work status Next steps

Review Board expressed interest in seeing this project become recurring with supplemental funding in FY09, and a request to see a full proposal in the spring semester with a three-year project plan. Board endorses plan to upgrade wireless in Clark A and C wings, and in Morgan Library, with replaced access points being used to fix problems in other buildings at ACNS discretion. Motion to set funding level at $180,000, with $90,000 in University matching funds: Approved by unanimous consent UTFAB - 03/05/2007Wireless Expansion Proposal3

Plan Upgrade Clark A (all floors) to latest wireless standards and supporting high-density utilization. Upgrade Clark C (all floors) to latest wireless standards and supporting high-density utilization. Upgrade Morgan (all floors) to latest wireless standards and supporting high-density utilization. Redeploy wireless devices removed from above locations to supplement wireless in other buildings, for example, Eddy and Education.

Equipment Status Most equipment being delivered tomorrow! Remainder backordered – waiting on status (expected delivery of Spring Break)

Work Status Goal: To either have completed or have made good progress on completion by end of Spring Break Facilities surveying install locations tomorrow and start installation of mounting brackets in 1-2 weeks. Telecommunications to run cabling in next few weeks. Xirrus to install wireless access points over Spring Break Issues: Asbestos in ceiling tiles in Clark Remodel of Clark A Morgan is a big project – may not complete by Spring Break.

Next Steps Identify additional locations to augment wireless with equipment that is removed from Clark/Morgan. Most likely Education and Eddy. ACNS will monitor other locations and welcomes input from UTFAB on preferences. Develop 3 year plan

Note Easy Access Wireless deployed No VPN necessary! Secure and Authenticated Docs at: TILT and AIB to get same wireless as is going into Clark/Morgan
