Writing 1 The Second Semester Presented by Dr. Mohamed Sha’at

The objective of the Session Students are expected to: -Write supporting and concluding sentences. -Write good coherent paragraph about restaurants.

Supporting & Concluding Sentences 1- What is a good supporting sentence? A good supporting sentence is related to the topic sentence and the controlling idea. It gives more information that explains the topic of the paragraph. 2- What does a writer do to explain the topic sentence? Writers answer the questions who, what, where, why, and how to explain the topic sentence. The answer of these questions help the reader to create a vivid vision about the topic being tackled. Invite students to do activity 1 p.58. Then, Ss can do activity 2 p. 59 and compare their answers on activity one to the information in each paragraph.

Kinds of Supporting Sentences, P.61 Writers use different kinds of supporting sentences. They may: - Explain reasons behind a certain fact. - Describe something. - Give reasons that motivate exact behavior. - Give facts about someone or something. - List some examples. - Define something. Activity 3: Matching Supporting and Topic Sentences - Ss. read the two topic sentences p. 61 and match the supporting sentences with the correct topic sentence. - Students do activity 4 pp

Write three supporting sentences for each of the following topic sentences. 1- It is very important for everyone to give up smoking. 2- Living in another country has different advantages. 3- English language is an international language that should be learnt at early stages of life. 4- There are some simple ways to save money at the supermarket.

1- It is important for smokers to give up smoking. Scientific researches have indicated that smoking is enormously harmful to your health. Cigarette smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causes many diseases, and reduces the health of smokers in general. In addition, there's no safe way to smoke. Replacing a cigarette with a cigar or a pipe won't help you avoid tobacco's effects.. 2- There are some brilliant benefits of living abroad. One of the greatest things you can learn from living abroad is how to talk to people. Another important benefit of living abroad is that you very quickly learn to live with less stuff. Moreover, living abroad has a tangible benefit that teaches us how to ask for and accept help.

3- English language is an international language that should be learnt at early stages of life. This language is the official language in a large number of countries and learning it will enable you to communicate with foreigners easily. Also, many of the world’s top films, books and music are published and produced in English. Most of the content produced on the internet (50%) is in English. 4- There are some simple ways to save money at the supermarket. Firstly, before heading to the shop, write a list of the things you need. This makes you spend less and only buy what you need. Secondly, try to check items on sales. Thirdly, buy fruit and vegetables when they’re in season and it works out cheaper.

The Second Lecture Activity 5 pp : Invite students to brainstorm some ideas for each of the general suggested topics. Then they should write a topic sentence with a controlling idea about each topic. The first example can be discussed with students before start doing this task.

Restaurants - cheap/expensive. Popular/ luxurious. - Types of food: grilled, roasted, fried, cooked. - There are different kinds of restaurants which serve various types of food. A sport ( Football) - Description of the game.- Football fans. - Competitions. - Future vision. Football is a popular sport that charms a large number of fans.

Why was it the best vacation?My best friend accompanied me in that trip. How old were you at that time? I was fifteen years old. Where did you go?We went to Egypt. What did you do?We visited wonderful places. What is the distinctive thing that you still remember? Indeed, the Egyptian people are very generous and they like to help foreigners.
