Introduction to Databases Lesson Outline Principles of IT

I. Terms/Concepts What is data? What do we use it for? What does a database do? What is a template? How do templates make creating a database easier? What is a table and related table? What is the difference between a record and a field? What are forms? What is a query? What is a report? Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.2

II. Relevance of Using Databases Organization of vast amounts of data How do you think large corporations track employee data when they have literally millions of employees? 3Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

III. Database or Spreadsheet? On the surface, both types of software seem similar. After all, they store data, and you can enter data in a grid of cells. The question is, “How do you want to organize your data”? 4Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

III. Database or Spreadsheet? Database software has a relational structure that helps keep large amounts of information accurate and provides you with customized manageable tables. Spreadsheet software is mainly used for analyzing numbers using formulas, while Database software is used for the storage of large amounts of data that can be accessed easily and quickly. IV. Demonstration/ Guided Practice Let’s practice how to select a template and enter basic data. Open the Database program Locate and download one of the pre-built templates that come packaged in your software. These may also be called “Assets”. If they are not pre-installed, you may have to use the internet to find a template. Pick an item in the classroom to enter into the template as your first asset. A computer or projector is a good item. Save the new asset 6Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

V. Independent Practice Now you’ll be responsible for gathering “home inventory” data to create your own database Brainstorm fields needed to enter home inventory information You will need to “inventory” at least 25 items of value from your home You will then create a home inventory database 7Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.
