KNOWING THE PULSE OF YOUR ASSOCIATION’S MEMBERSHIP © Copyright 2009 Awareness Communication Technology, LLC. All Rights Reserved.

KNOWING THE PULSE The future success of Industry associations according to GMDC president David McConnell is that they: Must be in tune with members' needs and Must be willing to make changes to reflect them

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT MEMBERS NEED? The problem is… Most people do not know the difference between their Needs and their Wants Needs can't Needs identify those things we have to have, something we can't do without. Wants Wants identify those things we want to have, can something you can do without. Wants Wants identify those things we want to have, can something you can do without.

NEEDS WANTS IS THERE A METHOD FOR SUPPORTING MEMBERS IN SEPARATING THEIR NEEDS FROM THEIR WANTS?

WILL SURVEYS DO IT? Well if this method worked why do so many Association memberships struggle with declining revenue, lower retention rates and fewer members joining?

NEEDS 1. Survival 2. Freedom 3. Usefulness 4. Love 5. Self Identity © Copyright 2009 Awareness Communication Technology, LLC. All Rights Reserved. THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE THE ASSOCIATION EXPERIENCE NEEDS 1.Bilateral Communication 2. Value 3. Industry Knowledge 4. Certification 5. Affiliation/Culture

THE PROBLEM IS… Most Associations cannot distinguish between the core value of what the association offers its members and gets lost in the fantasy of “wants”.

SO WHAT DO WE DO?

3 KEYS TO KNOWING THE PULSE 1. Improved Bilateral Communication 2. Aligned Infrastructure in an Integrated Delivery System 3. Ensuring the “informal” organization, networks and culture that share a common understanding and vision are responsive to change

Implementing Interactive Bilateral Communication is a process-driven solution for constant communication with your membership A TRUE SOLUTION

A SEARCH TO SURVIVE Organizations are looking for the “magic” that will create teamwork, stronger affiliates and improve the value to their membership. Shared decision-making, leadership skills, policies, procedures, motivation, and incentives are all utilized by association executives in this search for cooperative and productive teams.

REALITY CHECK Organizations try to implement change but discover that sooner or later, people go back to their former perceptions, attitudes, thinking, feelings and behaviors.

CREATING ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURES RESPONSIVE TO CHANGE “Pocket Wisdom for Organizations: Creating An Organizational Culture Responsive to Change” eMod™ software-courseware plunges into the core of organizational culture and the importance of change, offering individuals logical explanations and a newfound awareness of equality. Rooted in 25 years of solid research, this eMod software-courseware offers practical tools and powerful lessons in understanding the sub- cultures within our own organizational cultures.

PROVEN TOOLS This eMod ™ Learning System gives organizations the tools to implement real and lasting change by changing their “culture” to one of empowerment.

PROVEN PROCESS This is accomplished by recognizing and STOPPING the core of dysfunctional attitudes and behavior and STARTING a unique process of empowerment that develops a “culture” of creativity, teamwork, and cooperation among all persons involved..

CREATING TRUE INTERDEPENDENCY All members of the team evaluate their own contribution to the drama, conflict, sabotage, passive-aggressive control, resistance and apathy that work against the organization’s goals and objectives: Recognizing problems of immaturity in self and others Understanding and separating Structural Authority from Emotional Self Authority Recognizing and changing the hidden processes of control and resistance (manipulative behaviors) Uncovering and discovering hidden and disruptive problems of excessive, compulsive and addictive behavior

Learning and implementing a process of personal and group empowerment that results in interdependent team efforts. Taking Responsibility: Making decisions Taking action Having accountability Implementing an ongoing self-directed study group program to maintain both the principles and the process in everyday life.

LET’S NOT FORGET…

22 Times are tough and they are going to get harder. In examining your association and your plans to survive in this current economic climate, you must seriously address vital signs in your communication, leadership, structure, systems, and members needs. Knowing the Pulse of your Association’s Membership Results in: Acquiring Members Retaining Members Marketing Your Added Value, and “Unique Selling Proposition” to your Membership THE RECESSION IS UPON US
