Grade 5 Ms. Driscoll

Mathematics In Grade 5, students learn computational and problem solving skills they encounter in their everyday lives. Basic skills are practiced, mastered, and applied to solve related realistic problems. Manipulative, drill, cooperative learning, class discussions and writing are the methods used to enable students to succeed in Grade 5 math.

Units A. Addition and Subtraction of Whole Numbers B. Multiplication of Whole Numbers C. Division of Whole Numbers D. Decimals E. Fractions and Mixed Numbers

A. Addition and Subtraction of Whole Numbers The Student: 1. Reads and writes whole numbers through hundred billion 2. Adds and subtracts multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000 using mental math strategies 3. Estimates sums and differences of whole numbers by using front-end estimation 4. Adds and subtracts numbers with up to six digits 5. Adds two digit numbers using mental math strategies 6. Evaluates and writes addition and subtraction expressions with one variable 7. Knows addition properties

B. Multiplication of Whole Numbers The Student: 1. Writes multiplication expressions with one variable 2. Uses the dot symbol for multiplication 3. Finds common multiples and the least common multiple of two or three numbers 4. Uses mental math strategies to find products when one or more of the factors is a multiple of 10, 100 or 1, Estimates using either rounding or front-end estimation 6. Multiplies a 2-or 3-igit number by a 1-digit number or a 2-digit number, or a 3-digit number 7. Uses mental math strategies to multiply 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number

C. Division of Whole Numbers The Student 1. Evaluates ad writes division expressions using one variable 2. Uses compatible numbers to estimate quotients with 1-or 2-digit divisors 3. Divides with zero in the quotient 4. Decides how to use the remainder to answer with a question to a division problem 5. Divides multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000 mentally by multiples of Divides by 1 or 2-digit divisors with quotients to 4 digits with and without remainders 7. Identifies the greatest common factor of 2 or 3 numbers 8. Identifies prime and composite numbers 9. Uses a factor tree to identify the prime factorization of a number 10. Writes prime factorization in exponential form

D. Decimals 1. Explores relationships between decimals and fractions to hundredths using blocks, rods, and cubes 2. Uses decimal squares to understand thousandths 3. Reads and writes decimals through thousandths in standard and word from 4. Compares and orders whole numbers an decimals up to 4 numbers 5. Rounds decimals to the greatest place or greatest whole number 6. Explores addition, subtraction multiplication, and division of decimals using manipulatives 7. Estimates sums and difference of whole numbers and decimals by rounding 8. Adds and subtracts decimals to thousandths 9. Uses mental math to multiply decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000 with factors to thousandths 10. Estimates the product of a whole number and a decimal 11. Uses multiplication properties to multiply whole numbers by decimals with products to thousands 12. Rounds money products to the nearest cent 13. Uses mental math to divide decimals by 10, 100 and 1, Divides a decimal by a 1-digt whole number with quotient to hundredths 15. Estimates quotients involving money by using compatible numbers 16. Divides whole numbers by whole numbers with decimal quotients 17. Converts fractions to decimals

E. Fractions and Mixed Numbers 1. Uses fraction manipulatives to explore fractional parts 2. Writes equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing 3. Finds the greatest common factor, and uses it to write fractions in simplest form 4. Estimates fractions as closer to zero ½ or 5. Writes mixed numbers and whole numbers as fractions greater than 1 6. Renames fractions greater than 1whole numbers or mixed numbers in simplest form 7. Compares an orders like and unlike fractions an mixed numbers 8. Writes decimals as fractions and fractions as decimals 9. Estimates sums or differences of fractions or mixed numbers 10. Adds or subtracts fractions with like or unlike denominators 11. Multiples fractions by whole numbers, whole numbers by fractions, fractions by fractions 12.
